Stratiolaelaps scimitus is a predatory soil mite. In addition to the soil dwelling Thrips stages, it feeds on fungus gnat larvae and shore fly larvae. They can consume, on average, 4.5 thrips pupae or seven first instar fly larvae a day. They make amazing preventative beneficials to avoid and lessen thrips and fungus gnat infestations from occurring.

  • Rotate container back and forth a few times to gently shake contents and then tap out of container onto the growing medium or put out by the spoonful. When left in one position for too long, predatory mites will gather at the top, leaving the bottom with a much lower proportion of mites, so rotating the container as it is being tapped out is suggested.
  • For release in DWC systems, pour contents of container into Bugboxes or onto paper laid atop the bucket, allow an hour or overnight for mites to disperse, and then remove the paper/Bugbox.
